THOMAS MICHAEL FABEK, of Westlake, OHIO passed on Saturday December 6, 2014.
He is survived by one sister (Diane Feather of Pacific Palisades, CA); five children (Jeanette Gilfand of West Palm Beach, FL; Tom Fabek of Highland Heights, OH; Linda Oggero of Pomona Park, FL; Kathy Lizanich of Rocky River, OH; and Tim Fabek of Massillon, OH); ten grandchildren (Jackie, Aaron, Barry, Reed, Norah, Paul, Wes, Karen, John and Madison) and nine great grandchildren (Charlie, Dylan, Jake, Miles, Christopher, Kelsey, Silas, Stella and Tom).Tom Fabek was born March 8, 1926 in Youngstown, Ohio.
He was one of six children of Thomas Fabek and Elisabeth Janic.
His parents died when he was a child and after a time at an orphanage he was raised by loving foster parents.
He was a 1950 graduate of Youngstown State University and earned an MBA degree from Kent State University in 1962.
Mr. Fabek enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and served from July 1944 through July 1946.
He was a life member of the American Legion, VFW, Cleveland Grays, United States Navy League, Naval Aviation Foundation, and a charter member of the World War II Memorial Society.
He began working at the Ohio Bell Telephone Company in 1942 and in a career spanning 40 years he held a number of positions including Manager of the Northeastern Area Training Center. He was active in the Telephone Pioneers and served as President of the West Council Telephone Pioneers and Chapter President of the N.C. Kingsbury Telephone Pioneers.
Mr. Fabek was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, the Elks, and a People To People delegate to New Zealand, Australia and South America.
He established three scholarships at Youngstown State University and one at Cleveland State University.
A long time resident of North Olmsted, Ohio, Mr. Fabek was very active in the community. He was Chairman and President of the North Olmsted Community Council. He served as a member of the Planning Commission, the Charter Board of Review, and the Committee for Polaris Career Center. He was a member of Kiwanis for over 50 years, serving terms as President of the North Olmsted Kiwanis Club and Lieutenant Governor of the 14th Division. Mr. Fabek ran for Mayor of North Olmsted in 1985 as an independent candidate and he served as the Mayor's Administrative Assistant.
Mr. Fabek has donated his body to the Case Western Reserve University Department of Anatomy, Cleveland, OH.
A family and friends memorial event is being arranged.
