Eleanor Damoff Burkholder

Eleanor D. Burkholder, born in Mansfield, Ohio to immigrants from southeastern Europe in 1922 and raised well in Ohio, died peacefully in Connecticut July 10, 2018. She was 95.

Eleanor was the eldest of the seven of 10 children - offspring of Macedonian immigrants Done and Mary (Stoychevitch) Damoff, of Mansfield, Ohio - who survived childhood diseases that took the lives of their three elder siblings. She was a second mother to her youngest siblings after their mom died in 1948

For much of her adult life, Eleanor served as one of the many unsung heroines known as Navy wives. They - along with chief petty officers - made up the true backbone of the U.S. Navy after 1945 and during the Cold War.

Eleanor's late husband, John H. Burkholder, born in Pavonia in 1927, was a sailor and later a CPO who served in the Pacific in World War II and in the Vietnam War as a hospital corpsman - in the latter conflict as a Marine.
When John did his many years of shore duty around the eastern U.S. and at the Panama Canal, Eleanor and their children went along.

While her husband was at sea for a six-month Sixth Fleet "Med cruise" on the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga, Eleanor gave birth to their fourth child at a naval air station hospital in northeast Florida. After the baby, Mary, was born, John was able to talk with his wife via radiotelephone to get details of the happy news.

Outside the home, Eleanor enjoyed many years of work as a retail clerk at the Sears and O'Neill's department stores. She was an avid reader.
She also loved gardening, playing Scrabble and card games, singing and listening to recordings of great singers, from Vic Damone and Rosemary Clooney to Andy Williams and the Beatles.

Eleanor proved to be more adventurous than she often sounded. She was up for the touring the family did - on road trips around the US and drives to coastal villages in Panama, including jaunts focusing on the Civil War and other historical events. She especially enjoyed (despite the risk of seasickness) the smooth cruise on a small, government-owned passenger ship from Cristobal, Panama, to New Orleans. The family made that journey in the summer of 1969, when they moved from the Panama Canal to Mansfield, just before John's service in Vietnam.

Eleanor is survived by her sisters Violet Hake, of Mansfield, Ohio and Patricia Barrett, of Norman, Oklahoma.
She also is survived by her four children, John A. Burkholder, of Long Beach, Calif.; Diane E. Peck, of Tallapoosa, Ga.; Steven N. Burkholder, of Middletown, Conn., and Mary A. Burkholder, of Annapolis, Md.
Other survivors grandchildren Paul E. Burkholder, Nora J. A. Peck, Joseph P. Burkholder and Erica J. Rayack.

A burial service is set for July 21, at 1 p.m., at Pavonia Cemetery, on Amoy-Pavonia Road, in Weller Township.

The family asks that in lieu of sending flowers, consider a memorial contribution to the Mansfield/Richland County Public Library, 43 W. Third Street, Mansfield, OH 44902, addressed to the attention of "Collection Development Coordinator." Please mark on the check's memo line, "In memory of Eleanor Burkholder."
